The conversation


Stack Overflow's podcast this week features Philip Rathle, CTO at Neo4j, on what they call "knowledge context" for AI agents. The headline argument is the one Neo4j has been making for a while: that the model-only approach (LLM + vanilla vector RAG) hits a wall the moment your domain has any non-trivial structure — multi-hop relationships, taxonomies, entity disambiguation. Graph RAG, where the retrieval step traverses a knowledge graph instead of (or alongside) a vector index, is positioned as the answer.


The pattern, less the marketing


Vendor advocacy aside, the underlying observation is correct. Most enterprise RAG deployments we've seen hit one of three walls:


  • **Chunk ambiguity.** "Customer X has product Y" matches a hundred near-identical chunks; the model can't tell which is the canonical fact.
  • **Multi-hop questions.** "Who reports to the person who manages the team that owns this codebase?" — a vector search can't traverse that.
  • **Stale facts.** A vector index of last quarter's docs doesn't know last week's reorg.

Graph-shaped retrieval (whether through Neo4j, NebulaGraph, or just a Postgres recursive CTE over a normalised schema) addresses the first two directly. The third is an indexing-freshness problem, regardless of retrieval shape.


Why this matters for KYAX clients


If you've built a RAG system and it's plateauing around "useful for some questions, embarrassing for others", graph-style retrieval is worth a prototype. You don't necessarily need a dedicated graph database; you need to **model the relationships in your domain explicitly** and let the retrieval step use them. Worth half a sprint of investigation before assuming you need a bigger model.
